Twitter Faces Backlash Over Distorted Map Of India

It seems like controversy for Twitter is not taking a backseat. On Monday, Twitter fell under the rage of not only Indian Government but netizens as well, after publishing a distorted map of India showing Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh exclusive of India. It was visible on the career section of the Twitter website under the header ‘Tweep Life’ during the day, and was widely reported. Netizens demanded strict action against Twitter for such a mishap. #TwitterBan was trending the entire day. Twitter has already received a warning from the government for flouting various rules, and this controversy regarding the map of India, has escalated things to the next level. Sources said the government is seriously looking into the matter. In this case, since the wrong depiction is on Twitter’s website, the case is not that of an ‘intermediary’ but of a publisher which is responsible for content.
Twitter has surprisingly remained mum regarding the entire matter. No official words or statements. Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh had always remained a zone of controversy for Indians. Hammering on that, was the distorted map presented by twitter. However, this is not the first time that Twitter has misrepresented the map of India. In October last year, Twitter came under heavy criticism and faced backlash after its geotagging feature displayed “Jammu & Kashmir, People’s Republic of China” in a live broadcast from Leh’s Hall of Fame, a war memorial for fallen soldiers in the Union Territory of Ladakh. India had then issued a stern warning to Twitter, and had made it clear that they would not tolerate any disrespect for the country. In November, again, Twitter showed Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir instead of the Union Territory of Ladakh, following which the Centre again issued an official notice to the US-based company for disrespecting the territorial integrity of India through misrepresentation. This is the third time now, Twitter has repeated the same mistake, while not being in a favourable position with the government of India.
