Amidst the recent upsurge in the growth and demand of ed-tech platforms, the Central Government is prepared to bring in a legislation which will thereby provide a set of guidelines to be followed by the ed-tech players with the main aim of circumventing monopoly and avoiding exploitation of students.

The government officials have stated that the Ministry of Education along with the Ministry of Law and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will work upon a common policy to tackle the menace brought forward by some players in the industry. Revealing the government’s plan of action in due course, the Education Minister of India, Dharmendra Pradhan said, “The government’s role is that of a guardian for youngsters and the Education Ministry has observed that some edtech firms are exploiting students in the name of loan-based courses. We are in talks with the Ministry of Law and MeitY about how we can have a common policy on edtech platforms. While I respect edtech firms and their growth, there cannot be a monopoly…you cannot exploit students.”

Furthermore, the minister expressed that he does not wish to control the ed-tech players but rather take a precautionary step to ensure that the well-being and interest of the student community is not undermined as they will take up the position of policymakers in the future.
