Cell Phone Bills Are Getting Larger: Vodafone Follows Airtel In Raising Rates

Vodafone Idea (VIL), a telecom provider, stated on Tuesday that it will increase prepaid tariff rates by up to 25% starting November 25. “The new programmes will begin the process of improving ARPU (average revenue per user) and helps alleviate the industry’s financial stress,” Voda Idea said in a statement to the stock exchanges.

From Thursday, the existing 79 plan will cost 99, a 25% increase. The 149 plan will now cost 179 dollars, the 1,498 plan will cost 1,799 dollars, and the 2,399 plan will cost 2,899.

Data top-ups will now cost 58 (up from 48), 118 (Rs 98), 298 (Rs 251), and 418 (Rs 351) rupees, respectively, according to Voda. The tariff rate hike by Voda Idea comes just one day after Bharti Airtel announced a 25 percent increase in prepaid charges “to offer a reasonable return on capital for a financially sound business model.” The new Airtel prepaid tariffs will take effect on November 26. On the BSE index, VIL shares were trading 0.28 percent lower at 10.63.In a filing with the BSE on November 22, Airtel announced a 20-25 percent increase in its prepaid tariff rates, which would take effect on November 26. The prices are in line with its desire to keep the mobile ARPU at Rs 200, and eventually at Rs 300, “in order to give an acceptable return on capital that allows for a financially healthy business model,” according to the company.

“We also anticipate that this level of ARPU would support significant investments in networks and spectrum, as well as provide Airtel with the flexibility to roll out 5G in India,” it added.
