Anand Mahindra plans to support a startup that designs unique wheelchairs for people with disabilities
Anand Mahindra, an Indian business magnate, has lent his support to the ‘NeoBolt,’ a battery-powered motorised wheelchair developed in India. The vehicle was launched by a start-up called NeoMotion, led by professor Sujatha Srinivasan of the department of mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He announced that he will assist NeoMotion, a Chennai-based firm focused on offering improved mobility to those with disabilities, in a tweet.
“They did a demo of the device & as you can see, it’s simple, well-designed & eco-friendly,” Mahindra tweeted after watching the video. More than their creativity, I was impressed by their dedication to creating a company that does good while doing well. I intend to back them up.”
According to a press release issued here on Monday, the NeoBolt, which is equipped with a lithium-ion battery, can travel up to 25 km per charge at a top speed of 25 kmph, and provides customers with a convenient, safe, and low-cost means of outdoor mobility when compared to other vehicles. The researchers worked together with a variety of organisations and hospitals to develop the product, which they based on user feedback and tweaked on a regular basis.
Swostik Sourav Dash, an IIT-M alumni and co-founder of NeoMotion, is the company’s chief executive officer.
The NeoFly customised wheelchair cost $39,900, with the NeoBolt motorised add-on costing $55,000. By registering on the company’s website, users can pre-book their items for $1,000.
