WhatsApp unveils new feature to make payments simpler with an Indian touch


WhatsApp has unveiled a new feature in a bid to make digital payments simpler. WhatsApp gave an Indian touch by has introducing the rupee symbol ‘ ₹’ in its chat composer to help Indian users make seamless payments through the messaging service. 

WhatsApp also announced that the Camera icon in Composer now lets users scan any QR code to enable paying at more than 20 million stores in India.

Whatsapp rolled out the rupee symbol (₹) at the Global FinTech Festival (GFF) 2021 and would soon be available to users all over India, in the coming weeks.

The Facebook aownedmessaging app, which counts India as its biggest market with over 400 million users is scaling up in a phased manner  and are partnering with NPCI to work through this scale.

Presently their fucus is to drive awareness of their payments to feature on WhatsApp and to build new use cases to transact. 

Whatsapp India Director Payments Manesh Mahatme said the company’s vision is to empower every Indian with access to payments and financial services, thereby accelerating economic empowerment and financial inclusion.

WhatsApp reportedly may offer you cash rewards to use its payments platform — WhatsApp Payments. According to a report in WABeta, the website that tracks upcoming changes to WhatsApp, the company is working on introducing a cashback feature
