Power Global to retrofit three-wheelers in India, convert them to EVs

US-based startup Power Global announced it plans to retrofit over 8 lakh existing three-wheelers in India and convert them into electric vehicles. The startup will be offering these vehicles a battery swapping subscription model.

Founded by former aide to Elon Musk, Porter Harris, the company further plans to invest about $25 million to set up a lithium-ion battery manufacturing unit and battery swapping infrastructure in the country over the span of the next few years. Furthermore, the company plans to set up a one gigawatt per hour capacity battery plant in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, wherein they will be producing approximately four lakh battery units a year along with retrofitting kits. Mass production is reportedly expected to happen by the third quarter of next year.

Pankaj Dubey, Head of Power Global’s India subsidiary stated that the main idea behind the investment is the electrification of “the most polluting vehicles in the country like two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which are in very large numbers.”

The company plans to convert approximately 15 percent of 55 lakh three-wheelers presently on road to EVs within the next half decade.

“Their existing vehicles only will be converted to our solution and we will provide them with a kit to convert, which should be done in just a few hours,” mentioned Dubey.
