LinkedIn closes site in China


Microsoft is closing its Chinese career network LinkedIn after increasing pressure from government authorities. The service offered job search and professional exchange, and was the only social network from the USA operating in China.

LinkedIn came under fire recently after it blocked the profiles of several US journalists in China over content that was prohibited. This case brought to light the tradeoffs that the service had to make in order to stay in business in China.

Data from Chinese users are to be provided to the authorities upon request, and references to the Tiananmen Square massacre should be removed from online platforms in China. Media reports say that these past few months, LinkedIn has enforcing its rules more strictly after being asked by US authorities.
