Grofer’s, an online grocery delivery platform is preparing to grow and become a full-fledged e-commerce company capable of delivering anything, including mobile phones, within 10 minutes of receiving an order.
Founder and CEO Albinder Dhindsa shared his ambition for Grofers, founded in December 2013, in a blog post.
“Imagine you could get something delivered in 10 minutes. Milk for your morning tea, the perfect lipstick shade for tonight’s party or even an iPhone. Imagine that the store that ships them to you is owned by someone like you – a community entrepreneur. Your neighbour. Your friend. Maybe even you. This is Grofers’ vision,” Dhindsa wrote in the blog on October 18.
Grofers plans to develop community entrepreneurship by partnering with ambitious businesswomen and men who will run so-called dark stores where inventory will be stored. Dark Stores are traditional stores, including clothing and appliance stores, that have been converted into shopping centres that process online orders from customers. To date, Grofers has already partnered with 86 dark store owners in 13 cities and registered more than a million orders in the past three months following the launch of Grofers’s instant delivery service. who asked for clarification about the proposed move.
Interestingly, Dhindsa set his ambitions a few months after co-founder Saurabh Kumar left Grofers and announced his intention to start a quick business venture.
Kumar, who left Grofers in July, founded a company called Warpli that will deliver products to customers within “hours or even minutes” of placing an order. He has already started hiring engineers and product managers and plans to launch the business in a few months.
Kumar remains a member of the board of directors and a shareholder of Grofers.
Grofers currently supplies groceries and essentials including baby care, pet care and home accessories, which are low-value products compared to smartphones costing more than Rs 12,000.
