India receives its first indigenously constructed Hydrogen Fuel Cell bus; the bus’s only waste to be water

India received its first indigenously manufactured hydrogen fuel cell bus on Sunday, providing a significant boost to the Atmanirbhar Bharat program and its climate change aims. The bus was developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) alongside private firm KPIT Limited. The bus was unveiled in Pune by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.

The fuel cell uses hydrogen & air to generate electricity to power the bus, and the vehicle’s only effluent is water, making it the most environmentally benign means of transportation. In comparison, a single diesel bus traveling long distances generates 100 tonnes of CO2 each year, and there are over a million of them in India. Fuel Cell vehicles also emit no greenhouse gases.

According to Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, PM Narendra Modi’s Hydrogen Vision is critical for India to ensure inexpensive and accessible renewable energy, meet climate change targets, and create new entrepreneurs and employment. “Green hydrogen is a great clean energy vector that permits extensive decarbonization of difficult-to-abate emissions from the refining, fertilizer, steel, cement, and heavy commercial transportation sectors,” he added.

It is worth noting that hydrogen fuel cell trucks have lower operating costs than diesel trucks, which might usher in a freight revolution in the country. “Diesel-powered heavy trucks account for 12-14 percent of CO2 emissions. In this industry, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are an effective way to decrease on-road pollution “He took note.

Singh stated that by meeting these goals, India may transition from being a net importer of fossil energy to a net exporter of clean hydrogen energy, giving India global leadership in the hydrogen arena by becoming a big green hydrogen manufacturer and supplier of green hydrogen equipment.
