Indonesia Develops AI Weather Forecasting for Early Warnings
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has completed a feasibility study for an AI-powered rainfall nowcasting system, enhancing short-term weather predictions up to three hours ahead with 0.5 km resolution.
Unified Precipitation System Boosts Accuracy
The system integrates BMKG radar data with global satellite feeds through AI models, outperforming traditional numerical forecasts in pilot tests across Jakarta and West Java. It supports disaster management, agriculture, aviation, maritime, and energy sectors by delivering frequent updates critical for urban flood response and farming decisions.
Non-Commercial Rollout Targets Vulnerable Regions
BMKG retains full control over data and validation in this non-commercial collaboration with PT Environmental Intelligence Indonesia, planning expansion to Sumatra and Sulawesi. The technology strengthens national resilience against extreme weather, saving lives and optimizing economic efficiency through faster, precise early warnings.
