The Himalayan Startup Trek (HST) 2024, organized by IIT Mandi Catalyst, concluded with immense success, solidifying its reputation as one of India’s premier platforms for entrepreneurship and innovation. The 8th edition of the event took place from November 15th to November 17th, 2024, at IIT Mandi’s picturesque campus in Kamand Valley, Himachal Pradesh.
The event attracted a diverse group of over 200 startups, 50+ mentors, 30+ investors, government officials, and ecosystem enablers, all committed to fostering innovation and building a “Startup Valley in the Himalayas.”

IIT Mandi Catalyst has established itself as a key player in the Indian startup ecosystem, having supported over 500 startups, disbursed ₹17+ crore in funding, and created thousands of jobs in just eight years.

Key Highlights
The event was inaugurated by Shri Gokul Butail, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, who praised the efforts of IIT Mandi Catalyst in nurturing the startup ecosystem in the Himalayan region. He highlighted the unique opportunities Himachal Pradesh offers to startups, citing its tranquility and access to resources, which foster an ideal environment for innovation.
Prof. Chintan Vaishnav, Mission Director of Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, delivered the keynote address, offering profound insights on the importance of innovation in building a “Vikasit Bharat” (developed India). His thought-provoking session underscored how startups could play a pivotal role in addressing societal challenges and driving India’s sustainable growth.
Special guest Mr. Ramanan Ramanathan, Chairperson of the National Expert Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, echoed the importance of democratizing innovation. He called for leveraging India’s potential in building a self-reliant economy.
Fireside Chat with Top Investors: Insights to Fuel Innovation
A standout session featured Mr. Priyank Garg (Partner, Indian Angel Alpha Fund) and Mr. Aaditya Sood (Surge Venture Partner, Peak XV Partners), who discussed key factors that drive startup success. They emphasized the importance of customer-centric innovation, founder resilience, and leadership in ensuring long-term growth.
Mr. Garg urged entrepreneurs to focus on fundamental innovations that address real customer needs, while Mr. Sood emphasized the importance of “violent execution and reiteration”—the consistent and methodical refinement of ideas.
Panel Discussion: Global Expansion & Investment Strategies
The event also featured a detailed panel discussion on scaling startups globally. Ms. Madhuri Sawant (IvyCap Ventures), Dr. Srikant Sundarajan (Venture East), and other prominent experts shared strategies for identifying international market opportunities, adapting to local regulations, and leveraging global ecosystems for growth.
HST Grand Challenge
The HST Grand Challenge, a highlight of the event, brought together over 700 applications, with the top 80 startups showcasing innovative solutions in four thematic areas: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Build for Himalayas (BFH), Environment & Sustainability (E&S), and Bio Innovation (BI). Several startups received recognition for their groundbreaking ideas and practical applications, with 12 startups awarded grants totaling INR 11 lakhs. Dr. Srikant Sundarajan announced an additional 50% grant contribution for the Build for Himalayas theme.
Investor Den: Connecting Startups with Funding Opportunities
The Investor Den at HST 2024 set a new benchmark with over 30 investors participating. A total of 19 startups pitched their business ideas to secure funding for expansion. Last year, the Investor Den raised INR 12 crores, and this year’s expanded setup promises even more opportunities for funding and collaboration.
Masterclasses: Expert Guidance for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
HST 2024 also hosted several Masterclasses, where industry leaders shared essential insights on securing early-stage investments, leveraging government support, and navigating the startup ecosystem. Sessions by Dr. Deepak Motwani (Wadhwani Foundation) and Mr. Ganesh Abhishek (T-Hub) provided entrepreneurs with practical strategies for growth and funding.
