Epic Games, Google reach settlement, may reshape Android app rules

Epic Games and Google have reached a comprehensive settlement in their long-running legal dispute over Android app store policies. The agreement, filed jointly in U.S. District Court, proposes sweeping changes to how Google operates its Play Store and manages app distribution on Android devices. Key elements of the settlement include reducing Google Play’s service fees to 9% or 20% depending on transaction types, allowing users to install verified third-party app stores with a simplified process, and permitting developers to offer alternative payment options within apps or via web links.

The settlement seeks to expand developer choice and competition while maintaining user safety. If approved by the court, these reforms will apply globally through June 2032, extending the scope beyond the initial U.S.-only injunction. Google and Epic emphasized that this deal doubles down on Android’s vision as an open platform and aims to foster a more competitive ecosystem.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney praised the proposal as a comprehensive and positive resolution, highlighting that it addresses many of Epic’s long-standing concerns, such as high fees and restrictive policies. Meanwhile, Google’s Android president Sameer Samat noted that the settlement would resolve litigations and provide greater flexibility for developers.

This agreement marks a significant shift in Android app economics and distribution models, potentially reshaping the app landscape for developers and users worldwide by lowering fees, enabling third-party stores, and diversifying payment options.

The court is expected to review the proposed settlement soon, which would end the multi-year antitrust lawsuit and set new standards for mobile app marketplaces.
