BYD October sales dip 12%, first revenue drop in five years

BYD Reports 12% Sales Decline in October, First Revenue Drop in Five Years

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD announced that its vehicle sales for October 2025 fell by 12% compared to the same month last year, totaling 441,706 units. This marks the second consecutive month of year-on-year sales decline for the automaker, which had sold 502,675 vehicles in October 2024.

The drop in vehicle sales comes amid intensifying competition from domestic rivals such as Geely and Leapmotor, particularly in the budget electric vehicle segment, resulting in a market share decrease for BYD in China from 18% to 14% over the past year.

BYD also reported a nearly 33% year-on-year decline in third-quarter net profit, which fell to 7.82 billion yuan (approximately $1.10 billion), along with a 3% decrease in quarterly revenue to 195 billion yuan. This revenue drop represents the company’s first in over five years and highlights the mounting pressures of fierce domestic competition, changing regulatory environments, and pricing challenges affecting margins.

Despite the sales and profit dip domestically, BYD’s overseas expansion efforts show early signs of success. European registrations of BYD models nearly quintupled in September 2025, and the company is advancing its presence in key markets such as Japan with new model introductions tailored for local preferences.

BYD aims to rebalance its growth strategy by focusing more on premium models, design updates, and increased exports to offset domestic market challenges. Its research and development spending rose 31% in the first nine months of 2025, indicating ongoing investment in future technologies including autonomous driving.

In summary, BYD’s October sales decline and quarterly revenue drop mark a rare slowdown for the Chinese EV giant amid rising competition at home. However, continued international expansion and product innovation efforts offer pathways to sustain growth as the company adapts to an increasingly competitive electric vehicle market landscape.
