After buying Bungie, Sony goes all in on live service games


Sony is all set to work upon its larger vision- live service games. By buying Bungie earlier this year, Sony has gained experience and a lot of knowledge on making online multiplayer games that grow over time.

Jim Ryan ,CEO of Sony interactive Entertainment shows the company’s keen interest and focus on continuously updated online games. It plans to spend 49%  of its PlayStation studio development budget on live games and expects to increase it to 55% by 2025 targeting 12 different live service games.

Bungie is synonymous with Destiny, one of the popular sci-fi series after Halo which it left with Microsoft. It is a futuristic first person with its satiating mechanics, it has an incredible online multiplayer experience. The company ended it’s deal with Activision which was a 10 year long partnership paving the way for sony which bought it for $3.6 billion.

Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totokoi added that“The strategic importance of this acquisition lies not only in securing the successful Destiny franchise, as well as the major new IP that Bungie is currently developing, but also in integrating into the Sony group of expertise and technologies that Bungie has developed in the realm of live game services.”

Live service games are intriguing, the curiosity to further explore the game makes the users to pay to get further access. The game to last requires change and growth over time which makes it more sustainable and admirable by the users. Most free games these days do not require subscription because of Microsoft and Sony’s own premium subscription facilities.
