PhonePe Adds ChatGPT Features to App Ahead of IPO, Enhancing User Experience with AI

Indian fintech giant PhonePe has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT’s advanced conversational AI capabilities directly into its mobile app ecosystem. This integration enables millions of PhonePe users to access ChatGPT features seamlessly within the app, marking a significant innovation leap ahead of PhonePe’s anticipated initial public offering (IPO). The move reflects PhonePe’s strategy to combine payments, commerce, and artificial intelligence-driven services under one umbrella to deliver more personalized and intuitive digital experiences.
PhonePe’s ChatGPT-powered assistant is accessible via the company’s homegrown Indus Appstore—a native Android app marketplace designed as an alternative to Google Play, tailored specifically for Indian users. The integration leverages OpenAI’s natural language processing APIs to enable real-time conversations and intelligent assistance. Users can now interact with ChatGPT to perform a wide range of tasks including planning travel, finding suitable products, comparing options, drafting emails, generating ideas, translating text, and obtaining explanations on various topics.
A key highlight of this integration is its multilingual capability, supporting over a dozen Indian languages, enabling users across diverse linguistic backgrounds to engage with AI in their native languages. This enhances accessibility and adoption, especially among users less comfortable with English. Unlike global standalone apps or web browser access, PhonePe’s embedded ChatGPT provides a localized, seamless experience integrated into a platform familiar to millions.
According to PhonePe’s leadership, this partnership is designed not only to enhance user engagement but also to accelerate consumer adoption of generative AI technologies across India. Rahul Chari, PhonePe’s CTO, emphasized that combining AI assistance with PhonePe’s digital payment and commerce services opens new avenues for innovation, improving how consumers manage everyday tasks.
From a user perspective, the integrated ChatGPT app simplifies digital interaction by offering conversational AI assistance within a single platform. Users no longer need to download separate apps or visit third-party sites to access AI tools, reducing friction. This builds on PhonePe’s vision to evolve its platform from a payments app to a comprehensive digital ecosystem encompassing financial services, shopping, utility management, and now, AI-powered support.
The collaboration with OpenAI is also seen as a milestone in the convergence of fintech and AI in India. As generative AI becomes embedded within mainstream apps, it is poised to transform how users seek financial information, navigate services, make decisions, and manage daily routines. PhonePe’s approach exemplifies how localized AI integration can drive customer value in large emerging markets.
Data privacy is a significant consideration in this integration. PhonePe has clarified that while it facilitates ChatGPT access, data exchanged during conversations are governed by OpenAI’s privacy policies. PhonePe itself does not store or use conversation data for financial or behavioral profiling, keeping user’s financial transaction data separate and secure.
With over 610 million registered users and a merchant network exceeding 44 million outlets as of early 2025, PhonePe’s integration of ChatGPT is expected to set new benchmarks for AI adoption in the Indian fintech space. This initiative provides PhonePe a differentiated edge ahead of its IPO, showcasing its commitment to innovation and customer-centric services.
Looking ahead, this integration could pave the way for more AI-driven features such as financial literacy guidance, budgeting insights, and enhanced customer support, further embedding artificial intelligence into consumers’ everyday lives.
