JioCinema, the OTT platform under the patronage of Mukesh Ambani, has forged a strategic alliance with South Korean gaming company Krafton, the creator of BGMI, to broadcast the highly anticipated esports tournament in India, the Battleground India Series (BGIS) 2023. This collaboration follows JioCinema’s recent acquisition of streaming rights for prominent events like the IPL, international cricket matches, and HBO content, with expectations of significantly amplifying its user base.
The remarkable evolution of esports from a niche activity to a mainstream sensation has captivated audiences, prompting excitement over the delivery of an electrifying experience to a broader spectrum of viewers across the nation with BGIS 2023, as stated by Hursh Shrivastava, Head of Strategy, Partnerships, and Acquisitions at Viacom18 Sports.
BGIS will offer bilingual commentary (Hindi and English) for preliminary matches, culminating in a spectacular grand finale. The tournament will witness the participation of over 2,000 teams competing for an impressive prize pool of Rs 2 crore.
Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of Krafton India, shared his aspirations for the partnership, affirming, “With this partnership, we hope to transform the consumption of esports in the country and inspire the next generation of esports champions.”
Krafton’s substantial investments in Indian enterprises, totaling nearly $140 million, encompass diverse companies such as Kuku FM, Nodwin Gaming, Loco, Pratilipi, and Lila Games. The company’s recent commitment to infuse an additional $150 million into India’s gaming landscape over the next two to three years underscores its dedication to the nation’s gaming ecosystem.
Notably, Krafton‘s gaming titles, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) and PUBG, faced a temporary ban in India due to security concerns. BGMI successfully made its return in May of this year, following a three-month period of scrutiny and approval by Indian authorities. This careful evaluation aimed to ensure compliance with security and regulatory standards before its relaunch.
