Rebel Food to manage Wendy’s chain in India as cloud kitchen operator: Report
- ByStartupStory | March 2, 2023
According to reports from the media, on Tuesday, Rebel Foods entered into an agreement with Wendy’s to grow and enhance the burger chain’s brick-and-mortar restaurants in India.
According to the media, the recent deal between Rebel Foods and Wendy’s is not a new collaboration but rather an extension of their existing partnership. The two companies reportedly signed an agreement over two years ago to manage Wendy’s delivery-only outlets in India.
With this latest development, Wendy’s previous collaboration with Sierra Nevada, which had the authority to expand the burger chain’s physical presence in India, comes to a close.
As per the enhanced partnership agreement, Rebel Foods is expected to build roughly 150 conventional restaurants for Wendy’s in India over the next ten years. This will be in addition to the previously signed agreement in December 2020, where Rebel was entrusted with the responsibility of managing 250 cloud kitchens in India that cater exclusively to delivery orders and not dine-in customers. Presently, Wendy’s has a presence in 90 locations spread across 19 cities in India, with Rebel operating three of its traditional restaurants.

Abigail Pringle, the President for International Development at Wendy’s, has expressed that “India is a crucial market for the company with significant potential for growth”.
Fast food chains like Wendy’s have gained rapid acceptance in India, where there is a growing inclination towards global fast food brands. These companies have achieved this by altering their menus to cater to the local taste. Wendy’s, which is headquartered in Ohio, has customised its offerings to include dishes such as Spicy Aloo Crunch Burger made with potatoes, a Paneer Delight Burger with cottage cheese, and spicy Masala Fries, among others, to suit the Indian palate.
Sequoia Capital and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. have invested in Rebel Foods, which was established in 2011. The company collaborates with numerous local brands and operates more than 450 kitchens in 70 cities throughout India.
