Google to lay off 12,000 employees

Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc is laying off 12,000 employees, its chief executive said in a staff memo shared with Reuters.

The job losses affect teams across the company including recruiting, corporate functions, as well as some engineering and products teams.

The layoffs are global and impact U.S. staff immediately, Google said.

The announcement comes at a time of economic uncertainty as well as technological promise, with Google and Microsoft investing in generative artificial intelligence, a fledgling area of software.

Sundar Pichai, Alphabet’s CEO, said in the note, “I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI.”

Amazon laid off 18,000 employees worldwide earlier this month, including 1000 in India. Meta had to let go 11,000 employees whereas Twitter is conducting rounds of layoffs since Musk’s acquisition.
