Startup ecosystem is growing in West Bengal: NASSCOM

According to NASSCOM (East) chairman Sanjoy Chatterjee, this week has seen improvements in the startup ecosystem in eastern India, particularly in West Bengal.

He revealed during a press conference held here that NASSCOM, the leading trade organisation for the IT and ITeS industry, has so far nurtured 221 start-ups in the area.

Seven years ago, it established the warehouse for mentoring the biggest start-up ecosystem in the east of the nation.

79 of the 221 start-ups that received incubator support were funded, including 49 in the second series. These start-ups in the MSME and large company sectors comprised both tech-related and non-tech ones.

“The startup ecosystem in the east, particularly West Bengal, is improving. A large number of IT and ITeS firms are going to start operations from the city,” Chatterjee said.

Other significant incubators in West Bengal, besides NASSCOM, include IIM Innovation Park and IIT Kharagpur.

NASSCOM will organize the first Bengal Entrepreneurs Summit on Technology in the city on January 19 and, according to him, more than 400 start-ups are anticipated to attend.

Along with venture capitalists and angel investors, he said the attendees would include start-ups in the IT, IoT, blockchain, data science, and fintech sectors.

Nearly 16 start-ups are currently receiving mentoring at the NASSCOM warehouse, many of them online, according to Chatterjee.
