Tata Group is going to begin the semiconductor chip manufacturing in India

The Indian multinational conglomerate Tata group is entering into the production of semiconductor chip manufacturing in India very soon. The announcement was made by the Tata Sons Chairman N.Chandrashekharan on Thursday in an interview with Nikkei Asia. According to his views production of the chips would make India a key supplier on a global scale and they have some plans to launch new business in emerging fields like electric vehicles too in the coming years.
He also added that , “We have created Tata Electronics, under which we are going to set up a semiconductor assembly testing business… We will have discussions with multiple players.” With this initiative of Tata the problem of importing semiconductor chips may soon get over. He pointed out that the salt-to-auto-to-steel conglomerate will “look into the possibility of eventually launching an upstream chip fabrication platform.” The group has already set up Tata Electronics under which semiconductor assembly testing business will be set up, and hinted that this project would be in a partnership with the US, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.
Chandrashekharan revealed in the interview that besides semiconductors, the company is focusing on new-age businesses, like manufacture of EVs and EV batteries, production of renewable energy and development of “super apps” that allow users to buy goods and services from groceries to financial products. Tata group has already planned to invest $90 billion over the next five years. And this project may demand Tata’s partnership with some existing semiconductor chip manufacturers. He affirmed that Tata Group aims to make India an important part of the global chip supply chain.
Tata group was founded in 1868 and it is still India’s largest conglomerate earning the revenue of around 12,800 crores USD in 2022. Jamsetji Tata is the founder and Mumbai is the headquarters of the group.
