The Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur (IITJ), and Swiggy have partnered to build a cutting-edge facial recognition system based on computer vision and artificial intelligence. Swiggy’s Applied Research team and researchers from the institute will work together on this project. The recently created face recognition system will enhance the Swiggy platform’s AI capabilities and enable enhanced security and compliance on the platform, making the user experience for customers and restaurant partners more seamless.
Swiggy understood the need for an AI-driven capability that can automatically identify and extract faces from a variety of pictures and selfies. By comparing the extracted faces to selfies made with the app, the extracted faces are utilized to verify a person’s identity. Additionally, this technology will be able to help Swiggy in a number of ways, including fraud detection, impersonation, shift attendance, etc.

“We are developing a solution that will streamline comprehensive background checks for delivery partners and help us control and reduce impersonation as well as fraud,” said Hemant Misra, Swiggy’s VP of Applied Research, of the collaboration.
IIT Jodhpur PI Professor Mayank Vatsa remarked, “The research team at IIT Jodhpur has been working on designing face recognition solutions for constrained and unconstrained environments for more than a decade. This is an opportunity to advance research for solving real-world applications of matching document ID with selfies.”
Future ambitions for Swiggy include expanding this ground-breaking technology to include client age verification for alcohol sales in the areas where it already conducts business.
