General Counsel for Flipkart Commerce resigns; interim leadership is given to Walmart India’s VP of legal


According to a message delivered to its staff by the Walmart group company, general counsel Saroj Panigrahi of e-commerce startup Flipkart Commerce has left the company for personal reasons after working there for two years. Panigrahi’s departure came as The Big Billion Days, the company’s annual festival sale, was underway.

A Flipkart official responded when approached by saying, “Saroj Panigrahi has resigned due to personal reasons.”Ashok Upadhya, vice president for legal, ethics, and compliance at Walmart India, has been assigned the additional responsibility of acting as interim general counsel to manage all legal issues pertaining to the businesses owned by the Flipkart Group. Upadhya will take care of legal issues involving the Flipkart online marketplace, wholesale, supply chain support, litigation, privacy, antitrust, and regulatory compliance.

Manisha Kumar, the legal department’s director of mergers and acquisitions, has had her responsibilities at Flipkart expanded to include overseeing corporate governance and secretarial duties. According to the mail, until a new council is appointed, Upadhya and Kumar will both answer to Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy and Walmart Asia Senior Vice President and General Counsel Erica Chan.
