Karnataka Government Proposes 1% Reservation Jobs For Transgenders

Karnataka government has proposed 1% reservation jobs for transgenders, in services or posts in every category of employment that are filled up through direct recruitment process. The proposal covers government jobs.
On May 13, 2021 to amend Rule 9 of the Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977, enabling reservation for transgenders. The draft stated that reservation of 1% would be available in each category of general merit, schedule caste, scheduled tribe, and in each of the categories of among the Other Backward Classes. A copy of the draft notification was presented on Friday to a division bench comprising Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Suraj Govindaraj of the High Court of Karnataka. The draft did not receive any objection.The draft also notifies that every appointing authorities must provide a separate column of ‘others’ with male and female gender in the application for recruitment to any category of Group A, B, C or D posts to enable trans-genders to avail reservation.

During the pride month the Government of Karnataka took important steps to ensure that transgenders receive an opportunity to work within the government sector, a well deserved rule was brought in action. As actions speak louder than words, it is important to eliminate the barriers restricting the LGBTQ+ community through similar rules and create a more inviting and equal environment for one and all.
