Case Filed Against Twitter And Journalists By UP Police

UP Police on late Wednesday fired an FIR against The Wire, a print journal, journalists Rana Ayyub, Mohammed Zubair and Saba Naqvi and ofcourse Twitter. Case filed against Twitter and journalists for sharing a video of an elderly man, who claims himself to  be a victim of hate crime. In the video, a man belonging to a minority religion is seen to be forced to chant”Jai Shri Ram” and his beard being cut off.

The Government in their FIR has mentioned that there was no verification of the information posted and it has created communal unrest. Twitter has been accused of not taking down the video and rather letting it to become viral, hence Case filed against Twitter and journalists. UP Police has claimed that the attacker of the old man belonged to the same religion as well, and the argument was over an amulet the man sold.

Twitter, now no longer has the protection of an internet intermediary and thus can be sued for content posted by its users. It pretty much explains why was the case filed against Twitter and journalists. All this has happened because Twitter has been unable to comply with the new IT Rules.
