Twitter On New IT Rules Appointed Interim Chief Compliance Officer For India


On Tuesday, Twitter confirmed that it has appointed an interim chief compliance officer and the details of the official will be shared with the IT ministry directly. The government of India had issued a notice to Twitter giving it one last chance to comply with new IT rules, as the platform didn’t take immediate actions in response, mandated under the new guidelines.

A Twitter spokesperson on Tuesday said the company is making a continuous effort to comply with the new guidelines, including with respect to hiring personnel in India. And keeping the IT Ministry informed of progress at every step of the process. The microblogging platform had been facing heat over the past few months, including during the farmer’s protest and later when it tagged the post of BJP leader as manipulated media. As cited by the government twitter has an estimated 1.75 crore users in India. 

The Chief Compliance Officer will be responsible for cooperating between the company and government agencies on all kinds of legal requests received from various government agencies and law enforcement organizations relating to the platform. The grievance officer will be responsible for overseeing the grievance redressal mechanism of complaints from the people who use Twitter services in India.

 The Nodal Officer will be held responsible for coordination with the government agencies and law enforcement in India to oversee the process of responding to orders, reports, and complaints.
