Zomato reinstates employee after National Language comment, Deepinder Goyal calls for higher tolerance

On October 19, Zomato co-founder Deepinder Goyal took to Twitter, only hours after Zomato stated that they had fired the employee who chastised a customer in Tamil Nadu for not knowing Hindi, to announce that said employee had been reinstated.

The termination of employment and subsequent reinstatement followed public outrage when a customer by the name Vikash posted screenshots of an exchange with a Zomato employee. The former was facing trouble with receiving his order from the restaurant he had ordered from due to a language-barrier caused miscommunication, when the customer stated that Zomato should hire people who speak Tamil if they offer services in Tamil Nadu, he was berated by the agent who said, “For your kind information, Hindi is our national language. So it is very common that everybody should know Hindi little bit.”

While Zomato was quick to issue an apology and fire the agent involved, co-founder Deepinder Goyal announced a few hours later that the executive had been reinstated saying, “this alone is not something she should have been fired for. This is easily something she can learn and do better about going forward.”

“Our call centre agents are young people, who are at the start of their learning curves and careers. They are not experts on languages and regional sentiments,” he added.

Goyal called for higher tolerance in the country in a subsequent tweet stating, “we should all tolerate each other’s imperfections. And appreciate each other’s language and regional sentiments.”
