In September, retail inflation declined to 4.35 percent, mainly due to lower food prices, according to government data released on Tuesday. Consumer price index-based (CPI-based) inflation was 5.30 percent in August and 7.27 percent in September 2020.
The National Statistical Office (NSO) reported that food basket inflation fell to 0.68 percent in September 2021, from 3.11 percent in the preceding month.
When formulating its bi-monthly monetary policy, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) considers mainly CPI-based inflation, with a tolerance band of 2 percent on either side.
The RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das stated last week that inflation is likely to moderate in the coming months, combining with favorable base effects.
Inflation is expected to be 5.3 percent in 2021-22: 5.1 percent in the second quarter; 4.5 percent in the third quarter; 5.8 percent in the last quarter of the fiscal year, according to the RBI.
