Ministry of health and animal husbandry launch a national action plan to completely eradicate dog medicated rabies by 2030

On World Rabies Day on Tuesday, the central government launched a national action plan for dog-medicated rabies eradication (NAPRE) by 2030. Ministers Mansukh Mandaviya and Parshottam Rupala unveiled the plan and also gave the joint inter-ministerial declaration support statement on the behalf of the Health and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying ministries.

According to an official statement, the ministers urged all the states and UTs to make rabies a notifiable disease.
He acknowledged that most victims of the disease are generally young, healthy people at the peak of their productivity. Mandaviya drew from his own experience with zoonotic diseases, which he contracted whilst treating animals. A zoonotic disease like Rabies takes the lives of people in their prime, denying the family a member who earned a living.

“Rabies is 100 percent fatal but 100 percent vaccine-preventable. 33 percent of global rabies deaths are recorded in India,” said Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
Assuring NCDC as a great partner in fostering the One Health approach, she said the organization has a wealth of experience in tackling infectious diseases such as Zika, Nipah and Avian flu.
Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Sanjeev Kumar Balyan pointed out that newer strategies are needed to address the health challenges of today, with two-thirds of all present diseases having animal origins.
