The Amazon Future Engineer programme (AFE) launched on Tuesday in India, allowing students to gain access to quality computer science education. education and career opportunities for students from underrepresented and underserved communities.
Amazon aims to offer CS learning opportunities to more than one lakh students in 900 government and aided schools across seven states in India in its first year. With this initiative, CS learning will be available to government school students in Karnataka, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Telangana through multiple non-profit organizations dedicated to education.
Amit Agarwal, Global Senior Vice President and Country Head, Amazon India, emphasized the importance of computer science education at a virtual event that highlights the many benefits of early computer science education for India’s youth. In addition, he also added that the lack of accessible and quality course content, the limited availability of advanced learning materials in local languages, as well as the lack of a role model are among the barriers that prevent youth from underrepresented communities from dreaming of aspirational CS careers.
In order to address the local nuances, the syllabus has been contextualized for the Indian teacher and student community in government school settings, and will include coding fundamentals and futuristic technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing (Voice Technology) in Indian languages.
A number of CS-related education offerings will be added to Amazon India’s portfolio in the next few years. AFE will also support students with scholarships, internships, problem-solving hackathons, and targeted mentoring programs
