India approves Serum Institute’s application to enroll 7-11-year-olds in Covid 19 vaccination trials


As the nation prepares to protect children from the Coronavirus, India’s drug regulator allowed Serum Institute to enrol kids aged 7-11 years for its Covid-19 vaccine trial on Tuesday.
Nearly 1.4 billion of its citizens have been administered 870 million doses.

“After detailed deliberation, the committee recommended allowing subjects of 7 to 11 years of age to be included in the study,” a subject expert panel of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization said.

A domestically-produced version of AstraZeneca’s shot, Covid-19, is already being tested by Serum Institute in the 12-17 age group, with safety data presented for an initial 100 participants.
Zydus Cadila’s DNA Covid-19 vaccine is the only emergency vaccine approved in India for children and adults over 12 years.

According to Reuters, the SII has already completed safety studies on the Covovax vaccine in children between the ages of 12-17, which is an Indian version of the Novavax vaccine currently being developed by the SII.
