Mindfulness meditation proves to make you less prone to making mistakes

In recent years, meditation and mindfulness have gained a lot of interest due to their well-known benefits. Meditation helps in increasing self-awareness, reducing and managing stress as well as negative emotions. Therefore, researchers have started to look into the neuroscience behind the said results. Jeff Lin, an Michigan State University psychology doctoral and co-author of the paper, is one such researcher who is looking into the science behind the life-changing effects of meditation.

Lin and the other co-authors got more than 200 participants for their research where they studied monitored meditation and its effects on the ability of people to detect and respond to mistakes. After a short 20 minute session, the participants had their brain activity measured by electroencephalography, aka EEG, later followed by a distraction test.  The EEG could measure the brain activity in milliseconds and that helped them rule out the neural activity right after they were encountered with mistakes and their responses to it. Lin said, “A certain neural signal occurs about half a second after an error called the error positivity, which is linked to conscious error recognition. We found that the strength of this signal is increased in the meditators relative to controls.” although they could not find immediate results, there is always room for improvement with sustained meditation.
