Facebook launches its first smart shade with partner EssilorLuxottica

Facebook Inc launched its first smart glasses named “Ray-Ban Stories” in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, on Thursday. The Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses start at $299 and will be available in 20 style combinations in e-commerce stores.

The smart glasses, which will allow the wearer to take pictures and short videos, share them across Facebook’s services using a companion app, listen to music, podcasts, and take phone calls, will also be available in select retail stores in the USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, and the United Kingdom. It is seen as a major step toward its aim of offering true augmented-reality spectacles.

It comes in five colours with a range of lenses that include the clear, sun, transition, and prescription. The Ray-Ban Stories glasses are equipped with dual integrated five megapixels cameras, Facebook said in a blog post. The smart glasses come with built-in streamlined, open-ear speakers. The three-microphone audio array of smart glasses deliver rich voice and sound transmission for phone calls and videos, Facebook said in a blog post. The glasses are also equipped with beamforming technology and a background noise suppression algorithm. It allows the wearer to have an enhanced calling experience like how they experience in dedicated headphones.

The glasses include an optional virtual assistant so photos and videos can be captured hands-free through voice commands. Facebook said an LED light on the glasses would show when the camera is on, to make other people aware when a wearer is taking a photo or video.

It published a guide outlining how to use the glasses responsibly, for example turning them off in private spaces like public bathrooms and not using them for illegal actions like harassment or capturing sensitive information such as PIN codes.
