Telangana start up charge for EV battery play

The increasing demand EVs and rise of need to reduce dependence on imports of lithium- ion cells, a bunch of start ups in Telangana are amplifying their game to tap this multi- billion- dollar opportunity in the coming days.

Batteries are the pivotal component in EVs and account for up to 50% of the total EV cost.

Increasingly, India does not manufacture lithium- ion batteries and all its EVs are dependent on cells and battery packs imported largely from China.

Anjani Sri Maurya Sunkavalli, co- founder, Allox said his start up is working towards being a leading material producer for lithium ion battery cells in the country.

Allox stepped into a scenarios of the international Advanced Research Centre for Powand New Matescale up with the help of the latter’s technology of developing lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) in a cost- effective manner.

EV battery

For a battery, one needs cells, anode, cathode, electrolytes and separators are required.

While anode material ( graphite) is abundantly available in India.

Cathode material is meagre because it requires lithium which is not available in India.

Allox will be manufacturing the cathode material – LFP India.

“ Recently, we have a capacity SUNDAY SPECIAL to produce 50 kg LFP per day and we are arranging to scale it up to 1015 tonnes per day by the end of this year.

GODI is now in parleys with major OEMs are hard – pressured for lithiumion cells that are imported at a pre- mium from countries like China and South Korea, among others, and also have a long awaiting period for deliveries.
