Sweden’s Elonroad, NTU partner on automatic EV charging

Elonroad, the Swedish cleantech company specializing in automatic conductive charging solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), has entered into a strategic partnership with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore to test and develop advanced EV charging technologies designed for the future of smart and sustainable mobility. This collaboration aims to pilot Elonroad’s groundbreaking automatic charging system in Singapore, focusing initially on commercial EV fleets such as delivery vans and buses.

Elonroad’s technology enables vehicles to charge without physical cables by dynamically connecting to electrically charged rails embedded within road surfaces or parking areas, allowing charging while the vehicle is stationary or in motion. This system significantly reduces downtime, extends vehicle range, eases grid demand, and cuts total ownership costs by 25-40% while lowering carbon emissions by around 40%. The partnership with NTU leverages the university’s expertise in AI, control systems, and sustainable technologies to validate and optimize this solution in tropical urban environments.

The pilot project will focus on demonstrating scalable use cases for commercial EV adoption in Singapore’s high-density and tightly regulated urban landscape, aligning with national targets for electrification of public transportation and goods delivery to meet aggressive emission reduction goals. Together, Elonroad and NTU will collect real-world data, enhance the system’s intelligence via AI-driven traffic and battery management, and investigate integration with autonomous vehicle fleets.

This collaboration is part of Elonroad’s broader global expansion strategy, complementing successful projects in Europe, including partnerships with industrial vehicle manufacturers and ports. NTU’s involvement strengthens Singapore’s position as a leading innovation hub for future mobility technologies by fostering academia-industry synergy.

The venture reflects the growing trend toward infrastructure-integrated EV charging that dispenses with traditional plug-in methods, enabling higher operational efficiency and user convenience. As EV adoption accelerates worldwide, such innovative charging models are pivotal to overcoming range anxiety and accelerating the transition to green transport systems.

With contributions from NTU’s researchers and Elonroad’s engineering teams, this partnership promises to set benchmarks for automatic charging reliability, safety, and scalability, potentially transforming how cities power electric fleets and reduce urban pollution.
