Zerodha’s CEO, Nithin Kamath, joins the National Startup Advisory Council to guide the government in fostering an innovation-friendly environment. With 30 other non-official members, Kamath aims to shape programs catering to evolving startup needs.
Expressing enthusiasm for the role, Kamath stresses unlocking domestic capital for startups. He advocates reducing reliance on foreign investment, urging Indians to support homegrown ventures. “India needs to unlock domestic capital for startups/MSMEs,” Kamath emphasizes. “Reduce dependence on foreign capital and get Indians to back Indian startups.”
He highlights the surge in Indian entrepreneurial aspirations, crediting government initiatives, media coverage, and success stories. Kamath sees an opportunity for Indian investors to embrace new products, emphasizing the importance of retaining startup-generated wealth within the country.
As part of the National Startup Advisory Council, Kamath joins accomplished founders and industry veterans, aiming to represent varied stakeholder interests. The council’s role extends to advising on strategies to bolster India’s startup ecosystem and foster innovation.
Kamath’s vision aligns with leveraging internal resources and nurturing self-sufficiency within the startup landscape. “Apart from reducing external capital dependency, this could also mean that wealth created from startups stays in India,” he adds.
