Women’s Leadership in Startups Surges to 18% In The Last Five Years: Report
- ByStartupStory | November 3, 2023
Women’s leadership in the Indian startup ecosystem has significantly increased in the past five years, marking a notable shift in gender dynamics within the business landscape. According to the recently published ‘Women in India’s Startup Ecosystem Report’ (WISER), women-led startups have risen to 18% of the total, showcasing a remarkable transformation.
Key findings from the WISER report are:
In 2017, there were around 6,000 startups in India, with only 10% of them being led by women. Fast forward to 2022, and the startup landscape has expanded to 80,000, with women-led startups now comprising a noteworthy 18% of the total. Notably, 17% of India’s unicorns are now led by women.
The report underscores the growing presence of women in leadership positions within startups compared to traditional corporate environments. In startups, 32% of managerial roles are occupied by women, in contrast to 21% in corporations. The disparity becomes even more significant in top-level positions, with startups having 18% women compared to corporations with just 5%.
While both women and men start their startup careers with equal opportunities, women’s progress in terms of experience and seniority tends to lag behind. After more than a decade, a smaller proportion of women achieved top leadership positions in startups, currently standing at 24% for women compared to 40% for men.
