Truecaller launches digital government directory in India to protect against scammers

Truecaller introduces an in-app digital government directory to facilitate smooth communication between Indian individuals and the government by providing quick access to thousands of verified government contact information. By shielding consumers from fraud, spam, and scams, this crucial step will increase user confidence in citizen services.
Users of the Truecaller app have access to helplines, police departments, embassies, educational institutions, hospitals, and other important departments of about 23 states, including union territories, through the online government directory. Direct government sources and authorised government sources have provided this information. With this initiative, the public’s access to government representatives will be facilitated and streamlined, and the over 240 million Indian Truecaller users will be given easy access to the government.
One of the most common phone scams is pretending to be a government official, according to information Truecaller has learned from interactions with internet users and pertinent stakeholders. The development of a verified government contact directory is an extension of Truecaller’s work to promote communication that is trustworthy and safeguard our users from fraud and swindles. A green background and a blue tick, showing that the number has been confirmed, will be visible to users. In order to grow the directory, Truecaller is collaborating with several government agencies. Based on user input, the company plans to include contacts at the district and municipal levels in the upcoming phase. Any government agency can now exchange information and become verified in the directory using a straightforward approach developed by Truecaller.
Director of Public Affairs at Truecaller, Pragya Misra, commented on the feature’s debut by saying, “By enabling trust in digital communication, Truecaller has developed into more than just a caller identification app and is currently bridging the digital divide between India’s urban and expanding semi-urban/rural markets. Our goal is to safeguard the public from widespread impersonations of public servants that result in fraud and scams. We think that this feature will make it simple for citizens to contact the appropriate authorities when they’re in trouble. This is the first digital directory of government phone numbers of its kind, and we will continue to enhance it based on user feedback. We will keep working together to establish trust and make communication safe.”
