Supreme Court Bans Two-Wheeler Taxis in Delhi Pending Policy Formation, Dealing a Blow to Bike-Taxi Aggregators

In a major setback for popular bike-taxi aggregators like Rapido, Ola, and Uber, the Supreme Court issued a ruling on Monday prohibiting the operation of two-wheeler taxis in Delhi until a proper policy is formulated. The Delhi government escalated the issue to the Supreme Court after the Delhi High Court’s previous order on March 26, which instructed against any coercive actions being taken against bike taxi operators until the government establishes the necessary regulations for governing them.

“Plying of the bike taxis by the respondents cannot, among other reasons, be permitted without complying with conditions like police verification, obligations of installing GPS devices, panic buttons, etc, to ensure road safety and safety of the passengers,” the Delhi government’s plea read.

The government has recently announced its intention to introduce a policy for non-transport two-wheeler vehicles by June 30. In a prior instance, the government had issued a warning to Ola and Rapido, asserting that the use of two-wheelers for commercial purposes violated the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988.The case in the Supreme Court was heard by a vacation bench led by Justice Aniruddha Bose.
