During the pandemic, Sharjah saw a 68% increase in female entrepreneurs, and as the market grows, it will continue to cultivate an environment that is inclusive and supportive, according to Maryam Bin Al Shaikh, Director of the Sharjah Business Women Council, at the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Festival 2022.
Maryam participated in a panel discussion titled “Marhaba: Welcome to Sharjah,” which included tourism and business development professionals.
“Sharjah has seen a 68% increase in female entrepreneurs, and as the market grows and expands, we will continue cultivating an environment that is inclusive and supportive. None of this would have been possible without the important role that people at the top level of government play and the support we have from HH Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of HH the Ruler of Sharjah,” said Maryam.

The panel also included Khaled Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Mohammed Musharrakh, CEO of Invest in Sharjah, Ahmed Alkhoshaibi, Group CEO of Arada, and the Chief Sustainability Officer of Diamond Developers. Apart from emphasizing the need for stronger diversity, the panel also spoke about the relevance of culture and tourism in the region.
Khaled Al Midfa gave a talk about Sharjah’s rich history and culture. According to him, Sharjah is home to more than half of the UAE’s museums, and tourism accounts for over 12% of the region’s GDP.
“By embracing and sharing our culture and heritage, we can create a truly authentic and meaningful experience for visitors,” he said. He also stated that the region has a diverse population of over 200 nationalities, as well as a highly diverse economy.
A big push was also made for ‘Invest in Sharjah,’ which enables partnerships and collaborations with businesses and organizations.
Ahmed Alkhoshaibi of Arada discussed Sharjah’s exponential growth in the housing market over the last year. Over AED 700 million was transacted in the last month alone, with foreign nationals accounting for 90% of the investments, he claimed.
