Puneet Chandok, Head of AWS India & South Asia, Resigns from Position

Puneet Chandok, President of Commercial Business at Amazon Web Services (AWS) India and South Asia, has announced his decision to resign from his position. According to AWS India, Chandok’s resignation will take effect on August 31, 2023. The company expressed gratitude for his contributions and leadership during his tenure and extended well wishes for his future endeavors.

Effective immediately, Vaishali Kasture, the head of enterprise, mid-market, and global businesses at AWS India and South Asia, has assumed the role of interim leader for the commercial business division at AWS India and South Asia. Puneet Chandok, who previously held the position, worked extensively with enterprises, digital businesses, startups, and SMBs, assisting them in minimizing technical debt, fostering agility, and driving innovation.

Prior to his tenure at AWS, Chandok held leadership positions at McKinsey & Co. and IBM Global Services, where he served as a partner at McKinsey, nurturing relationships with enterprise clients, technology providers, and private equity firms, while also contributing to the expansion of the technology and digital practices in Asia for the renowned global consulting firm.

During Chandok’s tenure at AWS, he witnessed a significant surge in the adoption of cloud technology in India. In a recent announcement, AWS India revealed its plans to invest INR 1.056 Lakh Cr ($12.7 Bn) by 2030 in order to enhance and expand the cloud infrastructure in the country, catering to the growing demand. This investment in data centre infrastructure is expected to generate approximately 1.32 Lakh full-time equivalent (FTE) job opportunities annually in various sectors such as construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and more, contributing to the overall growth of Indian businesses.

AWS has been involved in a dispute with the tax department in India regarding an alleged tax payment of INR 549 Cr for fees generated from its cloud computing services. The Income Tax department raised a demand of INR 190.85 Cr for 2014-15 and INR 358.27 Cr for 2016-17 under section 147 of the IT Act, without imposing any penalties. A notice was also sent to AWS by the tax department in late January. However, AWS has labeled the decision as ‘baseless’ and intends to challenge it through legal means.
