Ossus Biorenewables raises $2.4 million to accelerate deployment of AI-powered bioreactor for green hydrogen production

Ossus Biorenewables, a Bengaluru-based green energy startup, has announced that it has raised $2.4 million in a pre-Series A funding round co-led by Gruhas and Rainmatter Climate. The startup plans to use the funding to accelerate the deployment of its signature product, the OB HydraCel, across a range of sectors including refining, foods, brewing, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.
The OB HydraCel is an AI-powered bioreactor that uses waste carbon in industrial effluents as the starting material for green hydrogen production. Ossus has developed a process that utilizes microorganisms sourced directly from effluents as catalysts for the green hydrogen production. The company claims that its technology can produce green hydrogen gas on-demand and on-site at less than one dollar per kilogram.
Ossus’s efforts align with India’s goal of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually without importing foreign-made electrolysers before 2025. The company has already deployed its signature product to a steel manufacturer in Jharkhand and is working with several other process industries to produce green hydrogen gas.
Co-founded in 2017 by Suruchi Rao, Shanta Rao, and Kamar Suhail Basha, Ossus Biorenewables aims to revolutionize the way green hydrogen is produced in India. The startup competes with other green energy players such as ReNew Power, Avaada Energy, Cygni Energy, Sea6 Energy, and Log9 Materials.
With the latest funding, Ossus plans to produce 3-5 tons of green hydrogen each day before the end of the year. The startup hopes that its innovative approach to green hydrogen production will help India reduce its carbon footprint and achieve its ambitious renewable energy goals.
