JSW Steel has placed an order with Switch Mobility Ltd., the electric vehicle division of Ashok Leyland, for 71 electric buses to be provided for the latter’s employee transportation.

Over the course of a 12-year contract, Switch Mobility will own and manage all activities, including the installation of charging infrastructure and necessary maintenance. 200 new employees will be hired by Switch to ensure the efficient operations and servicing of these electric buses, according to a statement.

With 71 buses being delivered to JSW Steel for their Vijayanagar factory, this is the first and largest electric bus order for employee transportation in the nation. Sajjan Jindal, chairman and managing director of the JSW Group of Companies, and Mahesh Babu, global CEO of Switch Mobility Ltd., have signaled the start of the first fleet of electric buses.

Milestone

According to Mahesh Babu, global CEO of Switch Mobility Ltd., the private electric bus market in India is estimated to be valued at 6,000 crore within the next five years. The private bus market in India accounts for 70% of the country’s total market share.

“This partnership with JSW is an important milestone for Switch Mobility, as we deliver our first and largest private bus order in the country. We are in talks with more corporations across the country that are showing keen interest in joining hands on this sustainable journey,” he added.

The air-conditioned buses incorporate Switch’s EiV 12 electric bus, which has world-class digital battery management tools and unique, connected technology solutions called “Switch iON” that enable remote, real-time diagnostics and monitoring services. The European Switch e1 bus and the EiV platform’s EV architecture are similar. The new generation of extremely effective, modular batteries on the buses feature cutting-edge lithium-ion NMC chemistry that was specially developed for the Indian market and climatic circumstances, according to the statement.
