US-based chip maker AMD has revealed its plans to invest approximately $400 million in India over the next five years. The investment will primarily focus on expanding its design centre in Bengaluru, making it the largest such unit for AMD globally.
The investment includes the establishment of a new AMD campus in Bengaluru, which will serve as the company’s largest design center. Additionally, AMD aims to create approximately 3,000 new engineering roles by the end of 2028. The new campus is expected to be operational before the end of 2023.
AMD first entered the Indian market in 2001 with a presence in New Delhi. Currently, it operates in 10 locations across India, including Bengaluru, Gurugram, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, with over 6,500 employees in the country.
Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology of India, expressed his appreciation for AMD’s decision to set up its largest R&D design center in India and expand the India-AMD partnership. He emphasized that this move will play a crucial role in building a world-class semiconductor design and innovation ecosystem while creating numerous opportunities for India’s highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers.
Mark Papermaster, AMD Chief Technology Officer, and Executive Vice President stated, “By further investing and expanding our presence in Bengaluru, we are committed to driving innovation in India to support the India Semiconductor Mission.”
