58 Companies Enroll for Rs 17,000 Crore IT Hardware PLI Scheme: Government Official

An impressive 58 firms, including major global players, have submitted their registration for the Indian government’s Rs 17,000-crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware, a high-ranking government official reported on Monday. Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, revealed that the response to PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware has exceeded expectations. Sharma shared this information during an event hosted by the India Cellular and Electronics Association. He noted that the registration deadline for the scheme is August 30 and confirmed the participation of top global players in the program.

Sharma affirmed, “58 companies have registered,” and highlighted that both foreign and domestic companies are part of this initiative. He further added that over two entities have already applied for the scheme. The PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware encompasses a range of devices including laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, servers, and ultra-small form factor devices. The primary objective of the scheme is to enhance and broaden the manufacturing ecosystem for IT hardware within the country.

In May, the Union Cabinet granted approval for a Rs 17,000-crore incentive aimed at bolstering local production of IT hardware such as laptops and tablets. Over the course of six years, the scheme is projected to stimulate an incremental production of approximately Rs 3.35 lakh crore. Despite having extended the application deadline for PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware twice, the government official indicated that the August 30 deadline will not be further extended.
