Facebook will delete data related to facial recognition of more than 100 million people. However, this technology will continue for some services.
The world’s largest social media company Facebook,which has now become meta, on Tuesday announced the closure of the facial recognition system. Meta’s social media platform Facebook automatically recognizes people in the pictures and videos uploaded through this system. Meta Has taken this step in view of the growing concern about the misuse of face recognition technology around the world. Meta Informed that it will delete data related to facial recognition of more than 100 crore people. However, this technology will continue for some services.

Meta has informed that the face recognition technology will be removed worldwide and this work is expected to be completed by December 2021. However, for some services this technology will continue even after this. Meta informed in a blogpost that if a personal device or account is locked, then this technique can be used to open it. Jerome Pesenti, META’sVice President (Artificial Intelligence) said that this decision will represent a significant change in technology history regarding the use of face recognition.
Facial recognition technology is a popular choice for retailers, hospitals and other businesses for security purposes,but critics believe it affects privacy and may target specific individuals. Facebook has taken this decision at a time when it has been facing criticism for the last few years for its misuse of technology.
