Google Launches Ironwood TPU: A Powerful AI Chip Challenging Nvidia’s Dominance


Google has unveiled its most powerful artificial intelligence chip yet, the Ironwood Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) version 7, marking a significant step in its challenge to Nvidia’s dominance in the AI chip market. The new chip delivers over four times the performance of its predecessor and major gains in energy efficiency, scalability, and data throughput, designed to handle the training and deployment of massive AI models and real-time AI applications like chatbots and virtual assistants.

The Ironwood TPU, built entirely in-house after nearly a decade of custom silicon research, features an architecture that can interconnect up to 9,216 chips within a single pod. This setup virtually eliminates data transfer bottlenecks, allowing AI workloads to scale seamlessly across multiple processors. Early adopters such as AI research firm Anthropic have already committed to using up to one million Ironwood TPUs to power their Claude AI model, indicating strong confidence in Google’s new AI infrastructure.

This launch comes at a critical time as demand for AI computing power soars globally. Google has increased its capital expenditure forecast for 2025 to $93 billion to meet this demand, with substantial investments planned for TPU-based and GPU-based solutions. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted AI infrastructure as a key driver of company growth and ongoing demand.

Unlike Nvidia’s widely-used GPUs, Google’s TPUs are custom-built specifically for machine learning workloads, optimizing performance and cost-efficiency while reducing energy consumption. Google’s move to make these TPUs broadly available to the public, after initially limiting access to internal use and select partners, indicates an aggressive push to capture market share in AI infrastructure.

The Ironwood TPU positions Google to compete directly with Nvidia, whose GPUs currently dominate AI training and inference. While Nvidia GPUs have been favored due to their versatility and robust software ecosystem, Google is betting on its vertically integrated approach—from chip design through software optimization—to offer superior efficiency and performance for AI developers.

Google’s Ironwood TPU is complemented by Axion, a new line of Arm-based virtual machines optimized for everyday computing tasks, delivering up to 60% better price-performance than comparable x86 systems. Together, these initiatives reflect Google’s comprehensive AI infrastructure strategy aimed at serving next-generation AI products like its Gemini models.
