Built in India, Governed by India: Island Computing Launches Sovereign Cloud Platform

India, 15 August 2026 | As the nation marks 80 years of independence, a Bengaluru startup is staking its claim: India’s cloud infrastructure can and should sit fully under Indian control.

Island Computing today announced the general availability of its fully managed sovereign cloud platform what the company says is India’s first purpose-built to keep data, hardware, and operations inside Indian borders and under Indian law. This isn’t a regional data centre tacked onto a foreign provider’s global network. It’s a full stack control plane, data plane, identity systems, and audit logs designed, owned, and operated in India by an Indian company.

“We’re the fastest-growing tech economy in the world, and that growth needs infrastructure we actually control,” said Vishal Sirohi, Founder and CEO of Island Computing. “Sovereignty isn’t a limitation; it’s a competitive edge. Our banks, government agencies, and builders can move quickly without giving up control of the stack their futures depend on. This Independence Day, we’re offering India its long-awaited digital independence.”

The numbers underline the case. Roughly 80% of India’s US$26.4 billion cloud spend in 2026 flows to AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and other foreign providers, leaving critical workloads and data subject to jurisdictions outside India. For regulated sectors, that dependency is increasingly hard to justify: the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, RBI’s data-localisation circulars, SEBI cloud advisories for capital markets, and CERT-In’s six-hour incident-reporting requirement are creating a compliance landscape foreign-hosted infrastructure even with local data centres can’t always address. Island Computing says it built MeitY compliance and these regulatory needs into its architecture from day one.

On performance, the platform provisions in 90 seconds, and production-grade, highly scalable, fault-resistant apps can deploy in as little as three minutes, with network topology, tenant isolation, autoscaling, observability, and identity set up automatically. In Island Computing’s published benchmark (islandcomputing.io), the company reports operating at 30% lower cost than equivalent configurations in AWS’s Mumbai region, before applying committed-use or enterprise discounts.

“Sovereignty is embedded in the architecture, not bolted on later,” said Lomash Kumar, CTO of Frontier Instruments and advisor to Island Computing. “For BFSI, healthcare, and government workloads, that difference matters when you’re trying to earn trust for the most sensitive systems. Island Computing looks like the kind of secure, sovereign, developer-first infrastructure India should be building.”

Island Computing is generally available today to enterprises, government bodies, and builders across India, with partner onboarding beginning immediately for teams in BFSI, healthcare, telecom, public sector, IoT, SaaS, video, gaming, and agentic AI.

Built in India. Governed by India. Owned by India. On a day that celebrates independence, Island Computing says it’s claiming the next chapter: digital sovereignty, built from the ground up.
