Tesla Highlights Low Running Costs To Attract Indian Buyers

Tesla is focusing on the savings in operating and maintenance costs to appeal to Indian consumers as it ramps up its presence in the country. The company’s India head, Sharad Agarwal, said customers who buy the Model Y can expect to recoup about one-third of the vehicle’s ₹60 lakh (approximately $67,000) price over four to five years through lower fuel and maintenance expenses.

Unlike traditional cars, Tesla’s electric vehicles require minimal physical servicing because most maintenance is handled remotely through over-the-air software updates. This reduces the need for visits to service centers, lowering ownership costs significantly. Additionally, electricity costs for home charging are roughly one-tenth the price of petrol, further improving the cost savings for Tesla owners.

Tesla recently inaugurated its largest sales and service center in Gurugram, integrating showroom experience with charging infrastructure and after-sales support under one roof. The company is also expanding its network of superchargers in key Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram to facilitate convenient charging.

Despite facing challenges from high import taxes that elevate the initial vehicle cost, Tesla’s long-term savings on operating expenses present a compelling value proposition to premium Indian buyers. Tesla’s strategy combines expanding retail presence with highlighting these durable cost advantages, aiming to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India’s nascent but rapidly growing EV market.

In a country where charging infrastructure is still developing but home charging remains a popular option, Tesla’s message of low running costs, minimal maintenance, and growing support infrastructure could help it carve a stronger foothold in India’s electric mobility landscape.
