The 4th Edition of TiE Women 2023 was launched by TiE Hyderabad during the ongoing Business Women Expo at Hitex, which will continue until Sunday.
The launch was attended by Ms. Jennifer Larson, Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad, and Ms. Shobana Kamineni, Executive Vice Chairperson of Apollo Hospitals.
During the event, Ms. Jennifer Larson emphasised the importance of such gatherings, highlighting the slow growth and lower earnings of women-owned businesses. She also mentioned that her upcoming move to a new location will provide a collaborative workspace, which could be a valuable resource within the ecosystem. Additionally, she shared her views on Indo-US programs and initiatives that aim to support women entrepreneurs.
Ms. Shobana Kamineni stated that the percentage of women’s participation in business in India is even lower than in Saudi Arabia. However, she expressed optimism that women’s representation in STEM fields and middle management positions has been significantly increasing, with 36% of India’s workforce in middle management being women.
Sharing her personal experience, Shobhana recounted building “India’s first purpose-built hospital in Chennai at the age of 23”. She emphasised that having confidence in oneself is crucial, but it is equally important to have the support and confidence of one’s parents in their abilities.
Ms. Shobana Kamineni urged women embarking on an entrepreneurial journey to be willing to take risks since risk-taking is an essential aspect of entrepreneurship. She cautioned against treating a business venture as a hobby, a tendency that she observed among many women entrepreneurs. Additionally, she emphasised the importance of seeking mentorship, as well as avoiding a discount-based business model, and instead focusing on incorporating cutting-edge technology to drive innovation.
In his opening remarks, Murali Bukkapatnam, a member of TiE Global’s Board of Trustees, explained that TiE Global is a 30-year-old entrepreneurship organisation that was founded in Silicon Valley and has had a significant impact on society. He emphasised that women play a crucial role in any nation’s economy, contributing 50% of its GDP, but they still face many challenges in accessing capital. He stressed that women entrepreneurs require more mentorship and opportunities to expand their networks.
