Piyush Goyal Urges Retailers to Register on ONDC Rather Than Developing Separate Apps
- ByStartupStory | April 26, 2023
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has emphasized the importance of registering main platforms on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and offering customers access to other products on the network, rather than creating separate applications. At an event hosted by ONDC on April 25, Goyal urged the CEO of ONDC, T Koshy, to eliminate any company that has not fully registered with the network. This move towards centralized registration is expected to streamline the e-commerce process and improve access to a wider range of products for customers.
During the event hosted by the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), CEO T Koshy revealed the organization’s efforts to collaborate with large enterprises such as HUL and ITC to strengthen their distribution network by empowering smaller retailers. ONDC is currently partnering with ITC and other major firms to bring their retail networks to the platform. In addition, the organization is collaborating with organizations such as NABARD to provide digital education for smaller retailers, helping them fulfill orders more efficiently. Retailers will learn proper packaging techniques and use technologies like QR codes and barcodes to track shipments across India. These initiatives are expected to streamline the e-commerce process and create a more efficient retail ecosystem.

During an event hosted by the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and CEO T Koshy listened to suggestions from the audience regarding the need to anonymize and publish sales data within the network to improve inventory and logistics management. Goyal proposed identifying and approaching companies with large retail networks to onboard them onto the ONDC network through their own platforms or smaller platforms, thereby expanding the range of products offered. In addition, ONDC plans to launch gift coupons ahead of Diwali, according to Koshy, which can be redeemed for products on the network. These efforts are expected to increase efficiency and enhance the user experience on the ONDC platform.
